In the meeting, the two sides reviewed the relationship between Iran and the UNHCR and emphasized the expansion of ties in-between.
Pointing to the displacement of people in Afghanistan and their taking refuge in the neighboring countries, Amirabdollahian said that Iran has been hosting Afghan refugees for over four decades and has tried to do its best despite the sanctions and the recent coronavirus spread.
It is imperative that international organizations be more active in performing their tasks with regards to Afghanistan in order to prevent even more displacement, he added.
Grandi praised Iran for its generous hospitality towards Afghan refugees and gave a report on the human rights situation in Afghanistan and his travel to the country.
Grandi also explained UNHCR’s plans in this regard and emphasized the entity’s commitment to address the situation of the displaced, including in Afghanistan.
Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian arrived at New York on Monday to take part in the UN General Assembly. He will have about 50 bilateral meetings besides the event.
